Do-it-yourself Vessel sink vanities

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

When it comes to installing new bathroom furniture, such as toilets, cabinetry, or bathroom vanities, some people may become overwhelmed when they have to take apart the existing piece and put in an updated selection. People become bewildered when it comes to pipes, tubes, electricity and plumbing and will often times overpay a professional to do the job within a few hours. Ask a few specialists in the bathroom industry and do a little research online or while watching remodeling television shows and you’ll surely learn everything you need to know when it comes to installing bathroom furniture.

Amateurs in the do-it-yourself experience will usually start off with a small project like installing a sink to spruce up their powder room. With so many design choices to choose from, the possibilities for updating the space are endless. Vessel sinks are a popular choice for the extreme modernist looking for a streamlined design and Trade Winds Imports is a great place to start if you are unsure about what colors and shapes you like.

There are two options when it comes to installing vessel sink vanities: Above counter or recessed, which allows you to lower the sink partially into the cabinet so only a fraction of the sink is above the countertop level. The choice is completely based on you and your design aesthetic. After you’ve removed the old countertop, measure and lay down a new granite countertop, set the new sink on top of it and mark the location where the new faucets and drain hole will be. It’s ideal to keep in mind that it’s easier to install the faucet before putting the vessel sink into the final position.

Place a bead of silicone caulk at the base of the sink where it will rest atop the countertop. Put the sink in place and wipe off the excess caulk. Attach the drain assembly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Screw on the nut firmly to hold the vessel sink vanity in place. Connect the drain to the P-trap underneath and connect the drain pipe on the wall. When everything is in place, turn on the faucet and check for any leaks. If you do indeed find any leaks, you can add a piece of plumber’s tape to provide extra blockage.
