Bathroom Remodeling: Tips to Help You Get Started

It seems that the bathroom, more than any other room in your house, tends to quickly fall into disarray. This leads to poor hygienic conditions, grime accumulation, and unpleasant odors. Unfortunately, your bathroom also tends to be the one room your guests will scrutinize most thoroughly. They will make assumptions about you, especially with regards to your personal hygiene, based upon what they find in your bathroom. So, how does your bathroom look right now? Is it messy? Does it smell? It might be time to consider remodeling. The easiest bathroom remodeling is to swap the bath vanities. If you are on a budget, we are here to provide some tips.

First, conduct an overall assessment of the bathroom. This should not take more than a few hours. There is no need to seek out professional services for this, though make sure you keep track of your assessment on a notepad or something similar for reference. It might be a good idea to consult lifestyle magazines or internet reference sites for professional assessment tips. Go at your own pace, do not rush your assessment! It is important that you are as diligent and as thorough as possible.

Guidelines to Follow

We understand that bathroom remodeling can be an overwhelming process, so we've listed out some things we think will be helpful to keep in mind before getting started!

  • Assess your bathroom

First, note any deformities or inconsistencies in the walls. Is the paint chipping? Is it warped from mildew? Also, note any visible cracks or cuts in the wall itself. Also, check the floor: if you have tile flooring, check for nicks and fractures. If you have a vinyl floor, check to make sure the panels aren’t lifting. Check your water components: do your showerheads and faucets work properly? Are they dirty, cracked, or rusty? Do your pipes make strange noises or swell or leak? Check your cabinets for cracks and creaks, and check all lighting fixtures. Finally, take the visual impact of the bathroom into account: How does it look? Does it satisfy your taste?

Assess both your color choices and style and ask yourself if these colors and styles still work for you. You have a lot of options when it comes to bathroom remodeling. It might be time for an upgrade! In your assessment, consider the size of the bathroom. If you are looking for more floor space, consider furnishing the room with a bathroom cabinet that you can mount on the wall. There are many designs, sizes and builds you can choose from when it comes to wall-mounted cabinets; you can have them custom-built as well. Look for a cabinet that satisfies all your needs, both functional and aesthetic. If you have plenty of floor space but need more shelves for storage, maybe look into getting a side cabinet.
  • Establish a budget & stick to it

Setting a budget for your renovation is crucial since it will determine just how drastic your changes can be, or “ how far you can go.” An established budget will dictate what you buy, what you refurbish, and what you avoid. Your budget can be as modest and practical or ostentatious and creative as you want, but make sure that you calculate it accurately beforehand. You don’t want to be stuck halfway through your remodeling, only to find you don’t have the funds to proceed. Likewise, you don’t want to underestimate your budget and find that you've limited yourself too harshly, yielding a drab and uninteresting bathroom.

Of course, you might make necessary revisions to your established budget along the way, but try not to stray too drastically from your original plan. Saving as much as you can while remodeling is also important. When you go out and purchase new bathroom vanities and décor, don’t forget to sell or trade-in your old appliances. Also, it’s often not too difficult to find items such as bathroom tiles or bathroom cabinets for low prices (try thrift shops, masonry wholesale, online giveaway sites, and online retailers). You can still make your bathroom a unique space without having to spend a lot of money.
  • Ask for help

How many people does it take to remodel a bathroom? While you may be able to do much of your remodeling work on your own, it is wise to seek professional help. This holds especially true for plumbing and electrical work. Don’t try and do your own wiring and plumbing work unless you're absolutely certain you know what you're doing.

Not only are these jobs potentially hazardous, but if they’re done poorly, they will lead to more problems later on. In the end, a poor remodeling job will only end up costing you more money than if you hired a professional in the first place.
