Using harsh chemicals in the home can pose a danger to your family and especially young children. Many green living advocates have made a push to toss out all of those harsh chemical cleaners that irritate the skin and cause nausea. Homemade bathroom cleaners are a secret that’s starting to get out. So what can you do to promote a eco-friendly lifestyle?
Standing over a dirty tub with your gloves on and your all purpose spray bottle may make you feel like you’re in the midst of a Wild-West Showdown. Restoring a brilliant shine in your bathroom is worth celebrating, but making the cleaner yourself is truly something to be proud of. With a few quick tricks, no stain, dirt, or grime will ever stand in your way again.
Homemade Green Bathroom Products
Some of the basic ingredients that can move dirt and build up are baking soda, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and borax. Using essential oils like lavender oil or lemongrass will give you bathroom a fresh natural scent that can’t be replicated by synthetic products sold in stores. Best of all, these ingredients are harmless and easy to get your hands on. Get rid of that cabinet full of harmful toxins and replace them with a few of your own homemade bathroom cleaners.
1. Homemade Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Toilet Fizzies act like traditional toilet cleaners that you plop in your toilet tank. A bit of forewarning, you shouldn’t use these cleaners in the tank. These chemicals can eat away at your toilet plunger and cause your toilet to leak. Instead, choose toilet bowl cleaner that mounts inside your toilet bowl OR you can make homemade Toilet Fizzies yourself! You’ll need to grab a few items out of the kitchen to make this concoction. Baking soda, citric acid, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and essential oil. Read the full directions at SavvySugar.com!
2. DIY Hard water Stain Remover
Nothing ruins a beautiful shower enclosure like pesky hard water stains that make your bathroom look dingy and icky. While you can try to squeegee your shower every time you’re finished washing up, there’s a simple DIY bathroom trick that you will love. Epsom salts have a natural cleaning quality that helps get rid of hard water shower stains in a snap!
Mix 1 cup of Epsom salt, 1/2 cup of baking soda, and 1/4 cup of liquid dish soap and you’re ready to go to work. This combination will deliver a one-two knockout punch. Baking soda and Epsom salt will remove all of the grime and dish soap leaves your shower door with a gleaming shine!
3. DIY Air Freshener
The first thing that you’ll notice when you enter a dirty bathroom is that stench that hits your face upon entry. How do I say, yuck! Mix up your own green air freshener using 1/4 cup of vodka, 1 tablespoon of water, and 20 drops your preferred essential oil. Parting with your bottle of vodka may be hard to do but the results will be more than worth it. If you’re really feeling green, add some green herbs into the mix. Try using sage, lavender, or sage!
4. Homemade Grout Cleaner
Getting down on all fours to scrub out your tub while breathing in toxic fumes is not fun. As one can imagine, inhaling these chemicals is not good for your lungs. Make your own homemade grout cleaner mixing up a ratio of 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide, and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Shake it all up and watch your grout lines restore to their original condition. This will improve the look of your restroom floors and help get rid of that yucky feeling in your bathroom.
5. Scented Toilet Paper Rolls
This is a cool DIY bathroom trick that I found on Pinterest. This one will take you just a few seconds. Place a few drops of essential oils onto the inside of your toilet paper roll. Every time you unravel the roll, the beautiful scents will rejuvenate your bathroom!
