After getting advice from an H&S consultancy service, a school principal decided to implement a new policy that uses fluorescent safety vests as a bathroom pass. Ben Ploeger, Principal of Eagle Ridge Academy, wanted to create an easy way to monitor students who were out of class. He helped develop the idea of a brightly-colored vest, which would be easily recognized and also wouldn’t pass too many hands (which could potentially spread germs and disease within a school). In an interview with 9 News, Ploeger stated:
“…the vests serve two goals. According to Ploeger, the bright vests indicate a student has permission to be out of class. He says they also improve sanitary conditions.”

Although the bright fluorescent vests will make it difficult for students to sneak out of class, one parent has raised questions about potential health hazards that the vests could create. When student’s take trips to the restroom, they may unknowingly transfer germs, bacteria, and other fluids that can transmit diseases.
Hand-washing safety is of the utmost importance. Parents should remind their children to wash their hands after touching any of these items. With both sides voicing their concerns, it will be interesting to see if other schools begin to adopt similar policies.
