So everyone’s probably heard this by now, but in one of the biggest cinematic news events of the last decade, George Lucas sold the rights to his Star Wars saga to Disney… and Disney promptly announced that they are fast-tracking development on a new trilogy (the fabled episodes VII through IX, which Lucas had originally conceived but never actually acted on).
For someone like me, who grew up with stories of droids and jawas and Jedi and bounty hunters and epic intergalactic dogfights, this was enormous news and brought back countless childhood memories. And as a child, few characters in that fictional world impressed me so much as the wise Jedi master, Yoda.
So, naturally, I took this news about a beloved childhood movie franchise, reminisced on some of my favorite sage “Yoda-isms,” and somehow found a way to tie it all together into a post about bathroom remodeling. And guess what? It turns out, Yoda would probably make an amazing interior designer. His advice and philosophy is perfectly applied to this kind of work. So, are YOU ready to embark on a stellar bathroom remodeling adventure of your own? Let Master Yoda’s wise words and teachings guide you to greatness!
1. “Do or do not. There is no try.”
This is the obvious one, so I’m just going to get it out of the way. When it comes to any kind of DIY project, you simply can’t get into it half-heartedly. Anything that’s worth doing is something you should just do. Commit to your project with everything you’ve got and plan, plan, plan. A good plan leads to great action; it takes “trying,” and turns it into “doing.”
Are you ready to get your re-design underway? Then start researching and drafting up an awesome plan right now. You’ll be ready for anything when it’s time to dive in and get some work done!
Do you think that Yoda built this sweet bog house half-heartedly?
2. “When 900 years old it reaches, look as good your vanity will not.”
He might well have been speaking about Ikea furniture. Sometimes it’s really easy for us to go the cheap way out, spending a relatively small amount of money on ‘adequately’ constructed furniture. But these furniture pieces are designed to last a few years, maybe a decade, before they need serious repairs if not total replacement. As with most things in life, it’s important that the things we need – or the things that matter to us – are built to last. A good vanity will work perfectly in your bathroom for a long time; a great vanity will work perfectly in your bathroom for a lifetime.
So when you’re picking out appliances and furniture for your new bathroom, think like Yoda. See the big picture, the “long game.” And buy quality products that last.
3. “Frustration leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate… leads to suffering.”
This is an important thing to know when you’re getting into a massive remodeling project: something WILL go wrong. Sometimes, several things will go wrong. Naturally, this can be very frustrating and aggravating. It’s normal to become upset with your project. But if you prepare for it – that is, if you start your project anticipating adversity rather than running from it – you won’t lose your head. Instead, you will USE your head! When we are faced with a hiccup in our plans, we really learn about how resourceful we can be.
But if you let yourself get too angry, and you start to hate your remodeling project, that frustration will consume you and you will truly find yourself in a “Dark Side” mood. Instead, think of Yoda, take a deep breath, buckle down, and do something awesome with your project in spite of the setback! Go back to number 1: do, or do not. And plan plan plan!
Wait… does Yoda’s house even HAVE a bathroom? Is that a weird question?
4. “Mind what you have learned. Save you it can.”
Once your project is completed, take a minute to celebrate with an ice cold beverage, a relaxing nap, or perhaps a wild Ewok dance party.
But keep in mind that, sometime in the future, you may be called on again to repair or remodel parts of your bathroom. Don’t neglect your past experiences! Always learn something new from any endeavor you embark on, and keep that knowledge with you as long as you can. Meditate on it. You’ll find that future projects will go much more smoothly!
Also, you can learn a lot from reading blogs and home magazines, or checking out your favorite home design Pinterest board. Keep learning and getting inspired, and you’ll always have a plan and a creative idea to make your project successful and awesome!
5. “Mud hole? Slimy? My home this is!”
Most importantly: no matter what anyone says, this is your home, and this is your project, and no one can take that away from you. Be proud of the work you do, and bask in the warm glow of knowing you’ve created something special. This is your home; so love it!
Alright young padawan, that’s it for Master Yoda’s bathroom remodeling advice. Now get out there and make great things happen in your own bathroom!
